Bed bugs are tiny pests that can cause significant discomfort in Singapore homes. Due to their elusive nature, homeowners may not always realise that bed bugs have already invaded their home until they start waking up with small, itchy bites. While many assume that bed bug infestations are limited to only bedrooms, there are various bed bug types and they can infest almost any room in your home.

Learning to look out for signs of bed bugs and tell the difference between bed bug types is essential to early detection and long-term prevention. This guide walks you through the most common bed bug types and available treatments once you identify an infestation.

What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?

Bed bug bites often appear as small, red, and itchy welts in clusters or lines on the neck, hands, arms, legs, or other body parts. While bed bug bites can occur anywhere on the body, they are most often found close to blood vessels near the skin surface.

While bed bugs are generally known not to transmit diseases, getting bitten can still be an uncomfortable experience due to the itch and soreness. While reactions vary depending on each individual, some people may develop painful skin rashes and potentially a secondary infection. Some people may also experience severe allergic responses, such as hives or blister-like lesions, while others may show little to no visible reaction at all.

Bed bugs are part of the bloodsucking insect family Cimicidae. Only three types of bed bugs feed on humans: Cimex lectularius (the common bed bug), Cimex hemipterus (the tropical bed bug), and Leptocimex boueti (the bat bug). Here are the key characteristics of the different bed bug types:

Species Name Common Name Key Characteristics and Habits
Cimex lectularius
Common bed bug
Found worldwide in both temperate and tropical climates, especially in densely populated areas. They have a small, flat, oval-shaped body, reddish brown in colour. Their appearance allows them to easily hide in cracks and crevices.
Cimex hemipterus
Tropical bed bug
Proliferate in warm and humid climates. It has a flat, oval-shaped body that becomes swollen and reddish after feeding.
Leptocimex boueti
Bat bug
Often lives in areas with both humans and bats, such as West Africa and South America, due to their feeding preference for both. Physically similar to the common bed bug.

Treatments

As bed bugs can survive up to a year without feeding, they are especially hard to eradicate once they have infested an area. If infestation has occurred, there are several types of bed bug treatments typically recommended by professionals:

1. Heat Treatment

Adult bed bugs and their eggs start to die off at 50-60°C. Heat treatment for bed bugs involves placing portable heaters around the home, then raising the temperature for 1-3 hours. However, this treatment requires more preparation and care as it can cause damage to items in the home.

2. Insecticide

Insecticide is one of the most popular types of bed bug treatments as it is considered quick and cost-effective. Professional exterminators may use this treatment as part of a series of integrated approaches. Insecticides in the form of powder, liquid, or aerosol may be sprayed on bed frames, mattresses, and other areas in the home where bed bugs may infest. Keep in mind that since bed bugs are difficult to find when hidden, insecticides must be used sparingly to minimise health risks. This method also cannot be used to kill bed bug eggs.

3. Fumigation

For more widespread infestation, professional pest control services may recommend fumigation.

This method is highly effective as it can kill all forms of bed bugs, including eggs. In this method, the whole home will be covered in an airtight tarp. Then, fumigant gas is released into the home to eradicate the bed bugs. This process requires you to vacate your home for at least 24 hours.

4. Freezing

Bed bugs are known to have low cold tolerance, and may experience 100% mortality when exposed to temperatures of -16°C for 80 hours. To exterminate bed bugs using this method, frozen liquid carbon dioxide is applied throughout the home, focusing on the bed area. While considered a fast process, these pests may take refuge in heavy fabrics.

5. Steam treatment

Steam treatment is usually used with another method for a more effective result. It delivers concentrated steam in each room of your home to kill bed bugs, focusing on small spaces where they may hide. However, this method may not work if the bed bugs have retreated into your walls.
