Mosquitoes are more than an annoying fact-of-life when living in Singapore’s hot and humid tropical climate; these persistent insects can spread dangerous diseases such as dengue and malaria. As much as you would wish to see a world free of mosquitoes, complete eradication is not possible, although effective strategies are available to keep their numbers under control.
Types of Mosquitoes in Singapore
Contrary to popular belief, not all mosquitoes are an irritation. According to the National Environmental Agency (NEA), more than 180 mosquito species have been recorded in Singapore but only three of those species pose a major health risk to humans.
Aedes Mosquito
You may be more familiar with the Aedes mosquito due to the start of Project Wolbachia in 2016. Under this pest-control initiative, lab-grown male Aedes mosquitoes are released into selected areas in Singapore to mate with female mosquitoes. Since the male mosquitoes carry the Wolbachia bacterium, the breeding results in sterile eggs that do not hatch into larvae.
There are two types of Aedes mosquitoes: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (the Asian Tiger Mosquito), and both appear similar to each other by having black bodies with white stripes on their legs. Dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses are mainly transmitted by these mosquitoes.
Culex Mosquito
The Culex mosquito is another widespread species in Singapore, usually found inhabiting polluted stagnant water in urban environments. Puddles, open plant pots, and man-made containers are prime breeding areas for this type of mosquito. While the Culex mosquito is not a vector for the dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. It still spreads the West Nile virus and Japanese encephalitis.
Unlike the Aedes mosquito, the Culex mosquito is mostly active at night, plain brown in appearance, and lacks distinguishing markings or stripes on its body.
Anopheles Mosquito
As the primary vector of malaria, the Anopheles mosquito continues to present a significant challenge to public health around the world. Annual global cases of malaria number in the millions, although in Singapore, there are only 100-300 cases per year. Despite the relatively low incidence of malaria, the Anopheles mosquito is still a cause for concern due to the potential for the reintroduction of the disease by travellers coming into Singapore. Less urbanised areas of Singapore remain vulnerable because they serve as natural habitats for the Anopheles mosquito, thus increasing the likelihood of a localised cluster of cases.
In terms of appearance, the Anopheles mosquito sets itself apart from its Aedes and Culex cousins with its upwards-tilting, 45-degree angled body posture, and dark and light wing scales.
Mosquito Pest Control

Both of them are effective in targeting mosquito populations and reducing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. When choosing a mosquito pest control method, it is important to note that fogging and misting rely on different techniques and equipment while varying in overall effectiveness in the following ways:
Fogging
Method: Heat is used to disperse a specialised water or oil-based mosquito insecticide into the air by using a fogging machine.
Effectiveness: Provides a rapid, although temporary solution. The airborne droplets of insecticide target both adult mosquitoes when they take flight, as well as larvae in breeding areas, instantly killing them. Repeated sessions of fogging may be necessary as part of your pest-control regime.
Best suited for: Large outdoor areas, events happening in such places, or when you need a quick, wide-ranging solution to your mosquito problem.
Misting
Method: A water-based insecticide solution is sprayed over a concentrated area, forming a mist that settles on the ground or other objects such as plants, and puddles.
Effectiveness: Misting kills mosquitoes at every stage of their life cycle; from egg to adult in potential breeding areas. It is effective in the long term because of its focused application which ensures the fine particles are not easily dispersed over a large area. However, the insecticide solution is eco-friendly because it doesn’t kill other types of insects (such as butterflies and bees) that aren’t mosquitoes.
Best suited for: Long-term prevention for use in environments that need continuous mosquito pest control, such as residential areas, or business premises such as eateries and hotels.
